Weekend Fun: Harry Potter Parties, Kids Shows, Free Concert

Celebrate the July 31 release of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two” at booksellers' parties across the Triangle. Enjoy live theater, movies, a food truck rodeo or a free concert.

1. Start your weekend off with a free outdoor reggae concert, “Jamrock,” compliments of the Town of Cary’s Starlight Concert Series at 7 p.m. Friday, July 29. The concert will take place in the gardens of the Page-Walker Arts & History Center. Mama Bird's Cookies & Cream will offer ice cream to beat the heat. 2. Head to a Harry Potter Midnight Release Party Saturday, July 30, at local bookstores that include: 

For a free side of queso, dress in Harry Potter attire and visit the Southpoint, Brier Creek and Patterson Place locations of Moe’s restaurants 8-10 p.m. Saturday, July 30, for a free side of queso.

 3. Enjoy live theater, including “Violet” at Paul Green Theatre in Chapel Hill and Disney’s & Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins” at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium in downtown Raleigh.

4. Step back in time to learn an old-fashioned skill at the "Craft Saturday: Candle Making" program noon-1 p.m., Saturday, July 30, at Historic Stagville in Durham. The cost is $1 per person. Call 919-620-0120 for details or visit stagville.org.

5. Head to the Carrboro Farmers Market on Saturday, June 30, for a special deal and fun activities for kids ages 5-14

6. Watch the “Cinderella” movie at Raleigh Little Theatre RLT’s Louise “Scottie” Stephenson Amphitheatre, 8-11 p.m. Sunday, July 31, and preshow activities. Take lawn chairs and blankets. Pack a dinner or enjoy fare from local food trucks.  

7. Head to the Chatham Street Chowdown food truck rodeo in downtown Cary 5-9:30 p.m. Sunday, July 31. Stroll along Chatham Street to enjoy music from local performers as well as fare from food trucks and local beer and wine vendors.

8. Play Pokémon Go Saturday, July 30,1-2 p.m.  when The Carolina Inn will be dropping Lures at the corner of East Cameron Avenue and South Columbia Street at the “Gift of the Class of 1999” PokéStop in Chapel Hill. Coupons for free house-made chocolate chip cookies will be given out.
