The 20th annual Great Backyard Bird Count takes place in February. Here are some local activities commemorating this event.

 

Kids Together Bird Count

Feb. 11 – Marla Dorrel Park, Kids Together Shelter, 111 Thurston Drive, Cary. 10-11 a.m. Free. Kids of all ages and abilities learn to identify birds and tally them by species for the Great Backyard Bird Count. Enjoy refreshments after the event. townofcary.org.

Bird Walks

Feb. 17-20 – Lake Crabtree County Park, 1400 Aviation Pkwy., Morrisville. 8:30-10 a.m. Free. Join park staff in collecting data for the bird count. Look and listen for birds in a variety of habitats and keep track of how many individuals of each species are found. New and experienced birders welcome. Great Backyard Bird Count Along the ATT

Feb. 17 – American Tobacco Trail, 1309 New Hill-Olive Road, Apex. 8-10 a.m. Free. Observe and count the variety of birds that live along the American Tobacco Trail. Hike to the Beaver Creek Bridge. Dress for outdoor fun. All ages. Register online. wakegov.com/parks/att.

Backyard Bird Basics

Feb. 18 – Lake Crabtree County Park, 1400 Aviation Pkwy., Morrisville. Noon-3 p.m. Free. Drop in to enjoy a variety of bird-related games, activities and crafts. Learn bird calls, make suet, help count birds and more. Register online. wakegov.com/parks/lakecrabtree.

Great Backyard Bird Count: Evening Adventure

Feb. 19 – Harris Lake County Park, 2112 County Park Drive, New Hill. 5:30-7:30 p.m. $1/person. Walk along the trails and ponds to discover birds, owls and more. All ages. Meet at the Longleaf Shelter. Register online. wakegov.com/parks/harrislake.

Homeschool/Track-out Program: Adventures in Birdwatching

Feb. 20 – Lake Crabtree County Park, 1400 Aviation Pkwy., Morrisville. 1-4 p.m. Free. Spend the afternoon learning all about birds. Go on a bird behavior scavenger hunt, play a migration game and make suet. Learn how to identify common species on the lake and at the feeder. Ages 6-12. Great Backyard Bird Count: Majestic Eagles

Feb. 20 – Harris Lake County Park, 2112 County Park Drive, New Hill. 10-11 a.m. $1/person. 919-387-4342. Learn about bald eagles and hike to the fishing pier to watch eagles soaring high. All ages. Meet at the Longleaf Shelter. Register online. wakegov.com/parks/harrislake.
