Wake Magnets Offer Parents an Up Close Look at Schools
Thinking of sending your child to a magnet school in Wake County for the 2012-2013 school year? Now’s the time to gather information and visit the schools as the deadline for magnet applications may move up from February to as early as the end of November or beginning of December, depending on how the Wake Board of Education votes at its Oct. 18 meeting. At that meeting, the board is expected to approve a new student assignment plan.
If you have a rising kindergartner, you could attend either of two sessions offered this month to help parents learn more about the schools. Wake County Public School Systems Magnet Programs will be hosting the “Mom’s Morning Out” information sessions at Project Enlightenment, located at 501 S. Boylan Ave., in Raleigh, from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 13 and Oct. 27. Don’t be fooled by the name, the sessions are for dads as well! While you’re there, you’ll have a chance to talk with parents of current magnet students as well as magnet school staff and get answers to questions about the different magnet school programs. You’re invited to take your rising kindergartners along. For more information on the events, contact the Magnet Programs Office at (919) 431-7355 or visit http://www.wcpss.net/magnet/.
If you have a child interested in attending a magnet school, a good way to explore options is to attend any of these upcoming magnet school events, which range from open houses to a fair and school tours. When I was looking into magnet schools a few years ago, I found the school fairs and tours to be an excellent way to get a feel for a school and to ask questions directly of teachers and principals. In gathering information, don’t overlook the Magnet Resource Center, located at 5625 Dillard Drive, in Cary. You can reach the center by calling (919) 431-7355, or you can drop by, but be sure to have your identification with you, as you’ll need it to enter the building.
