Victorian Carolers Get Listeners into the Holiday Spirit
"Carolgrams" by costumed singers blend safety with tradition
That first note of holiday music we all hear as winter approaches causes different reactions from different people. For some, it’s panic-inducing, reminding us of all that we need to do. For others, it’s a salve for the soul, triggering happy memories with friends and family. Often it’s a little of both! With this year’s holidays looking so different for all of us, one group is doing their best to help us celebrate safely and still get all “the feels” from hearing talented carolers sing traditional tunes.
With this year’s safety concerns in mind, The Victorian Carolers are offering “Carolgrams,” personalized mini-concerts, delivered right to your home or business by a quartet of carolers in Dickensian attire. It’s a perfect chance to send a smile to someone who can’t or doesn’t want to leave their home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group sings from a safe distance outdoors–outside a window or a driveway–and delivers that holiday feeling, just for them!
How The Victorian Carolers began
The group began in 2005, when the group’s founders Johnny and Paula Walters were facing bankruptcy due to mounting medical bills . They’d been trying to find a way to turn their passions and hobbies into a path to earn extra money. Always avid singers, they got together with several other family members to fulfill a request for carolers for an event. Next, the Walters and their new recruits put together costumes and started rehearsals. Through the years, members have come and gone, but the heart and mission of the Victorian Carolers took shape. The group is currently 12 members strong and has performed widely; they have caroled at the RDU International Airport, for the City of Raleigh, at the North Carolina Executive Mansion, at Disney, during multiple visits to the White House and for Santa and Mrs. Claus themselves!
Members of the group really love what they do. Alto Rebekah Hernandez shared her experience: “Singing with The Victorian Carolers gives me a unique way to share my love of music and encourage others. I love seeing the joy on people’s faces as they forget their cares and worries and just enjoy the music. It makes all the hard work of practice and preparation worth it. It’s as rewarding an experience as I have ever had as a performer.”
