Find out what life is like for Prairie Ridge Ecostation's resident black snake at a fun activity this weekend.

This weekend, there are lots of things to do with your family: Play at a fun playground in North Hills Commons in Raleigh, check out the New Heights Rappelling event and festival benefiting Kidznotes at the Capital Bank Building in downtown Raleigh, investigate the life of a black snake at Prairie Ridge Ecostation and explore vehicles at a big Touch a Truck event in Durham. 

Open Play in the Commons FREE

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday this summer is a great time to get your kids outdoors for some unstructured, open playtime. From 9 a.m.-1 p.m., the Open Play Area in North Hills Commons will be filled with tumbling mats and soft foam equipment, and surrounded by colorful fencing.

New Heights Rappelling for Kidznotes FREE

Sponsored individuals and teams will be rappelling down the Capital Bank Building in downtown Raleigh this June 2. Stop by to watch the fun and enjoy bands, food trucks, local mascots and more from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Kidznotes is raising money to add 50 new kindergarten students to their out-of-school music program of instrumental instruction, choir, music theory, general music, orchestra and band. Slitherin’ – Black Rat Snake Tales and Trails FREE

Stop by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ Prairie Ridge Ecostation June 3, 2-3 p.m., to find out more about the museum's resident black snake. Hear her stories and walk the grounds to see her familiar haunts. All ages are welcome for this activity, and no preregistration is necessary. Dress for the weather, bring water to drink and wear closed-toed shoes. Meet at the front gate near the kiosk.

Touch a Truck FREE

Get a close-up look at all kinds of fun trucks that do important jobs in our community at this event on June 3 from 3-5 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Over 20 vehicles will line the street immediately outside the park, including a brush truck, ambulance, search and recovery trailer, K9 vehicle and more. Kids of all ages are welcome to touch and explore the vehicles, and learn about them and the heroes who operate them. This event is free, and a Durham Bulls baseball game starts at 5:05 p.m. Tickets for the game (optional) are available here
