Superhero Fans Rejoice: Marvel Announces 11-film Lineup Through 2019
Last week, on the heels of DC Comics’ announcement of 10 forthcoming comic book films, Marvel unveiled its own plan—called “Phase 3″—that will stretch into 2019. Superhero fans will surely delight: Marvel alone is set to release 11 movies in the next six years; combined with DC Comics, Fox, and Sony, more than 30 superhero movies are planned between now and 2020.
Nevertheless, the surprise announcement from Marvel revealed that not only will there be a new two-part Avengers sequel, but a sequel to the summer hit Guardians of the Galaxy, and most importantly, its first solo black and female hero movies.
The first Avengers movie and last year’s Iron Man 3 were among the top five highest grossing films ever, together earning nearly $3 billion worldwide to date, according to Marvel. The Avengers alone—about a band of superheroes who save Earth from a mythical prankster and alien army—opened in May 2012 to $207.4 million in ticket sales, the biggest US debut of all time.
