Rainy Weekend Fun: 7 Things to Do Indoors With Kids in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill

With the forecast for rain this weekend, you may be looking for things to do indoors with your kids. Here are seven ideas for staying dry and having fun.

1. Take in startling facts at the Extreme Mammals exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.

2. Learn why pollinators are vital to the environment and our food supply at the free “Saving our Pollinators” exhibit, indoors at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill through Oct. 4. 

 

3. Head to  story time at a Barnes and Noble in Cary (11 a.m. Oct. 3)  or in Durham (2 p.m. Oct. 3).

4. Let beautiful voices transport you at the Bull City a Capella Slam, 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, in Durham. The event benefits Urban Ministries of Durham.  

5. Explore indoor play spaces at malls across the Triangle

6. Hear the music from 100 bands from around the world at this weekend's Wide Open Bluegrass Festival, which has moved indoors to the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh. 

7. Let your kids make some instruments and noise in honor of the Wide Open Bluegrass Festival at Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh. The “MakeShop: Pickin' Play,” is Saturday, Oct. 3, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Other Options

Celebrate at Triangle Oktoberfest  with live German music, traditional Bavarian food and fare, a "Kinder Platz" zone and more, noon-10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, and noon-6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 4 at Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. Oktoberfest has added additional tents for coverage from rain, but please check the Oktoberfest website before you head out to ensure the event is not cancelled.

For an out-of-town excursion, take your kids to ride Thomas the Tank Engine at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer, N.C., Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
