1. A. As hard as it may be to fathom, your baby stays very small for the first month of pregnancy. Your little one is only about the size of a single grain of rice when you are one month along. Within that month, important developments are taking place: The baby’s throat, mouth, and lower jaw are forming.

2. E. While you can safely indulge in iron-fortified breads and cereals to satisfy cravings and hunger, be sure to eat a varied diet. Beans, peas, raisins and apricots are all fantastic foods to enjoy throughout your pregnancy because they are high in iron and other vital nutrients. It doesn’t hurt that they’re tasty, too!

3. D. Not to gross you out or anything, but your baby will start urinating inside you when you’re approximately four months pregnant. He or she can pee up to a full liter in a single day. You haven’t heard the worst of it, though. Your baby naturally drinks the pee. It’s just the way a fetus’ body is designed. FYI, your baby’s fingernails start to grow at 11 weeks. Also, he or she begins blinking around week 26 and kicking starts as early as 16 weeks during a first pregnancy.

4. C. Although some pregnant women report changes to nearly all of their senses, evidence suggests that they likely experience an increase in their sense of smell throughout their pregnancy. Try to steer clear of offensive odors throughout your pregnancy and increase your exposure to safe scents like lavender, chamomile, jasmine and sandalwood, which promote relaxation.

5. A. Whales surprisingly start out at about the same size as a human baby when they are conceived. Whales also have many similarities to humans when it comes to pregnancy, although the whale gestation period is several months longer than the human one.

6. B. Let’s face it. Expectant moms often enjoy the fact that their bodies need extra food to properly nourish their growing baby. But “eating for two” doesn’t mean you should double your servings. During the second trimester, you should be consuming an extra 350 calories per day. Everyone’s body is unique, so talk to your doctor for specific recommendations.

7. B. Significant development takes place during the second month of pregnancy. Also, while you probably won’t actually feel your baby move until weeks 16 through 25, your baby starts moving during the second month of pregnancy.

8. E. This will come as no surprise to moms-to-be who are already feeling fully bonded to their unborn baby, but your baby’s entire body is formed by the end of the third month of pregnancy. Even fingernails, toenails, and teeth are beginning to form.

9. D. Ice is actually among the 20 foods pregnant women often crave. If you experience anemia during your pregnancy, you may feel an especially strong craving to chew ice.

10. A. Nearly all women have swollen feet during pregnancy. It’s simply a normal part of this time in your life for many reasons, including the fact that your body is producing a lot more blood and fluid to meet your baby’s needs. Be sure to get comfortable shoes that are at least a size bigger than what you normally wear.

11. E. Avoid all of these foods while pregnant. There are vegan alternatives to nearly any animal-based food nowadays, so you don’t have to feel deprived.

12. E. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests making sure there are no lead-based paints used in your home. Also, steer clear of areas where home repairs, like sanding or paint-scraping, can create dust that is dangerous for pregnant moms to inhale.

13. C. While all of these weights are within a normal and acceptable birth weight range, the average weight of a full-term baby at birth is 8 pounds. Boys tend to be heavier at birth than female babies. Also, it’s important to note that your baby is likely to lose approximately 8 ounces within the first week of birth, but typically regains that weight by the time he or she is 2 weeks old.

14. B. This is no laughing matter. Although your odds of developing postpartum depression are low, it’s a very serious condition that should never be ignored. If you find yourself feeling excessively down after giving birth, talk to your doctor and consider getting counseling.

15. C. A woman will often experience a bloody discharge when her body is preparing for delivery. This discharge occurs when the body disposes of the mucous plug that protects the fetus from the outside world. Sometimes the discharge happens days or weeks before labor, but typically it indicates that labor is imminent.
