Preview: 2021 Triangle Tango Regatta on Nov. 13 & 14
Watch NC State and other universities sail on Lake Crabtree
Ahoy! The 2021 Triangle Tango Regatta sets sail Saturday, Nov. 13 at 9:30am in the middle of Lake Crabtree. This intercollegiate sailing competition, presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance (GRSA) & NC State Sailing, brings 9 university teams together for a fun-filled day of racing. It’s a-“boat” time for the festivities to begin, and here is everything you need to know.
The two-day competition commences Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9:30am to 5pm and continues the following day, Sunday, Nov. 14, from 9:30am to 3pm. Set your GPS to Lake Crabtree County Park (1400 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville). Upon your arrival for this free and family-friendly event, hunker down alongside the banks of the lake or walk the perimeter to watch a full day of sailing. Root on your favorite southeast or mid-Atlantic college team. Teams participating include: NC State, Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, Clemson, University of South Carolina, University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Penn State, and Catholic University. The 9 teams will be manning Flying Juniors (FJs). This particular sailing dinghy is a great training boat for the Olympics. If you cannot make it in person you can also keep tabs by watching the live scoring here.
Hiking Around Lake Crabtree
If you are bringing the kids along, sitting in one spot may not be the best plan of action. Luckily, the lake has a 6-mile loop at your disposal. As you trek on the natural trail, the lake will disappear for moments, but for the most part will be within your gaze. One advantage of walking around the lake is the chance of stumbling upon a less crowded area that has a great view of the regatta. Hiking the trail takes between 2-4 hours depending on pacing. Some notable sights in addition to the pristine lake are the Heather Carr Memorial overlook, the dam, and the watch tower. Happy hiking and happy sailing!
