The Poe Center has provided health education to NC students since 1991.

The Poe Center’s dedication to positively impacting the lives of North Carolina youth through health education has been a constant since they opened in 1991. Instructors have educated over a million preschoolers through twelfth graders in 93 counties following NC Department of Public Instruction Essential Standards for Healthful Living Education on topics including nutrition, dental health, general health, family life and substance use prevention.

With local schools currently continuing their curricula via online methods due to COVID-19 concerns, puberty education is not included in many school systems’ remote learning agendas. The Poe Center can help fill this gap with their newly-announced online “Girl Talk” and “Guy Talk” workshops. Students will benefit from the same great content and same engaging activities as onsite Poe Center programs but will do from the safety of home. “Girl Talk” is scheduled for May 2, 9:30-11 a.m.; “Guy Talk” is set for May 16, 9:30-11 a.m.

Each workshop will address the topic of adolescent growth and development and the physical, social and emotional changes that everyone experiences during puberty. Candid discussions, online activities and 3-D exhibits will help parents/caregivers and students explore topics including the workings of the human reproductive system, personal hygiene and nutrition. Participants will finish the workshop with activities and prompts to continue these discussions  after the workshops are over.

The fee to participate in the online workshops is $25 for each parent/child pair. Information provided is geared toward children in grades 4-7. Preregister by emailing Poe Center Senior Health Educator Robin Pittman at r.pittman@poehealth.org
