On April 16, 2018, the Wake County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of changing the name of North Wake Landfill District Park to Green Hills County Park.

Visitors have enjoyed the popular North Raleigh park’s views and recreational amenities for eight years. However, its name has been a source of confusion, with some residents mistaking the park for the former landfill on the site or the nearby Wake County facility for trash and recycling drop-off.

The North Wake Landfill was established as a municipal solid waste landfill in 1996. It closed in 2008 and the site was converted to a park that opened in 2010.

The renaming is the culmination of a six-month long process. In October, county staff asked for the public’s help in coming up with ideas for the park’s new name. More than 230 entries were submitted via suggestion cards, an online portal and the park’s Facebook page. A committee reviewed the suggestions to arrive at a recommendation.

The new name, Green Hills County Park, is a nod to the park’s rolling landscape and one of its biggest attractions — a large hill that gives walkers, runners and bikers a view of the downtown Raleigh skyline on a clear day.

“The hill is the park’s most prominent feature, so it seemed natural to highlight it in the new name,” says Chris Snow, director of Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space. “We hope residents who have yet to visit the park will take this opportunity to come out and see what it has to offer.”

Green Hills County Park, located at 9300 Deponie Dr. in Raleigh, features a playground, picnic tables and shelters, walking trails, mountain biking trails and a multi-use trail that circles the large hill. More than 74,000 people visited the park in 2017.

The name change is effective immediately, and park signage will be updated in the coming months.
