Do you need child care while you shop or dine in Chapel Hill this month? Would you like to help a local cause? Courtney’s Drop In Kids Care, a day care business that opened Dec. 1 in Chapel Hill, will donate a portion of its December proceeds to UNC Children’s Hospital.

Courtney’s Drop In Kids Care will also provide free child care to siblings of children being treated at UNC Children’s Hospital on weekdays throughout December as space allows. Families can complete this contact form or email to inquire about availability.

Heather Rudd, a mother of three who owns Courtney’s Drop In Kids Care with her husband Gary, says she decided to partner with UNC Children’s Hospital this season for personal reasons. Heather’s sister, Courtney, for whom the day care is named, died at age 23 of a rare degenerative brain disease. Losing her sister to this illness inspired Heather to help other families, just as she was helped when her sister was sick and hospitalized in other states. She and her sister both worked at a drop-in child care business when they were younger and both shared a love of kids.

“If she were here today, we would probably be doing this together,” Heather said in a recent interview with Carolina Parent, recalling her sister, who was 7 years her junior, as “very spunky, feisty and very nice. She was happy and had a very infectious smile and was fun to be around, and kids loved her.”

Courtney’s Drop In Kids Care offers short-term, on-demand child care in which families pay an hourly rate and do not need reservations or memberships. Located on Farrington Road, the day care is open to children ages 12 months-12 years. Visitors can tour the facility and meet the staff at a free open house, 2-6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11.
