Movies and Concerts Can Be Found in Durham Parks This Summer
"Bull City Reels on Wheels" & "Rock the Lot" hosted by Durham Parks and Recreation
“Time to sit back and unwind. Summertime.” Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff know exactly how to spend time during the hottest season of the year. As a matter of fact, so does Durham Parks and Recreation. During the dog days of summer, park-goers can experience not one, but two outdoor free events: Bull City Reels on Wheels and Rock the Lot.
Looking for a family-friendly drive-in movie option that’s not going to break the bank? In that case, check out the movie magic happening under the stars at Durham County Memorial Stadium, 750 Stadium Drive. On Saturday, July 16, catch The Croods: A New Age, rated PG. If pre-historic animated comedies are not your thing, then try Mrs. Doubtfire, rated PG-13, on Aug 6. Gates open at 8pm and the movie starts at 9pm. For the purposes of comfort and accessibility, participants can watch the big screen from a car, chair, or blanket, and can come by wheels of any kind (ex. car, bike, bus) or by foot. In order to appreciate the 20 by 40 ft screen, tickets must be reserved online in advance. Only one ticket is needed per parking spot. Given that, walk-ups with no prior registration will not be admitted into the event.
Feeling a little more musical? Grab a chair from home and be ready to groove to the rhythmic styles of two local bands. On Saturday, July 24, travel to the Riverside High School Parking Lot, 3218 Rose of Sharon Road, for a performance by #Epitome. From Durham, this Neo Soul, R&B, Pop, and classic Soul female trio will make you wonder why you brought your chair at all. Similarly, you can hear Salsa, Jazz, and Soul from salsa band, Sajaso on Aug 14 at the Southern High School Parking Lot, 800 Clayton Road. On both nights, gates open at 5pm and the concert runs from 6-8pm. Unlike the Bull City Reels on Wheels, pre-registration is not required. However, space will be limited to the first 200 attendants.
Additional information that applies to both Bull City Reels on Wheels and Rock the Lot:
