Mountains-to-Sea Trail Celebrates 44 Years
Join the celebration by hiking 44 miles of the MST this September
Happy Birthday to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST)! The 1175 mile trail stretching from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks turns 44 this September. The Friends of the MST, an advocacy group that promotes construction, volunteer work, and promotion of the trail, have a task for anyone that is up for the challenge. Hike any 44 miles of the MST this September for a chance to win 1 of 6 prize packs from REI. Tie up your hiking boots, grab the family, and hit the trail!
How to get started:
Let’s get into the nuts and bolts on how this birthday challenge works. First, a hike must be on foot, not on bike or paddling. Second, there are three ways to track your progress: the MST Guide app, a Google Form, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. The MST Guide app allows you to track your hike in real-time. Coupled with a leaderboard, the app will keep you motivated. The Google Form allows non-app users to put in their progress as they go, while the email is only for a cumulative submission of miles and dates at the end. Last, complete all 44 miles by Sept. 30. Are you up for the challenge?
Where to hike:
The Triangle is adjacent to two segments of the trail, 10 and 11, and thus a perfect place to complete the 44 miles. The former 79.3 mile segment starts at Eno River State Park, follows the river into Falls Lake, and ends at the Falls Lake Dam. The latter picks up at the dam, traces the Neuse River Greenway Trail, and ends south of Smithfield totaling 65.7 miles of trail. Try one section or both. In either case you will experience pristine views, hidden beaches, and woodland wildlife. Bring the family along for some quality time outdoors as you complete this birthday challenge.
