Meet Our 2016 Fit Family Challenge Expert Panel

Four experts guide spotlight families and participants

The Carolina Parent Fit Family Challenge returns for its third year and will take place May 1-June 26. Carolina Parent is following the progress of the Lucas and Prater families for eight weeks and will report on their challenges and progress in our May and June issues. Both families will receive customized plans and motivational guidance from four experts as they embark on this life-changing journey. Let's meet those experts!

Evie Houtz, program specialist for Be Active Kids, will serve as the families' fitness instructor. She will help our spotlight parents discover the best ways to get everyone enjoying an active and fun-filled lifestyle. Houtz previously worked as a personal trainer and Health Enhancement Director for the Chapel Hill-Carborro YMCA. At Be Active Kids, she focuses on coordinating statewide campaigns to increase active play and physical activity for kids. Tracy Owens, owner of Triangle Nutrition Therapy, is a board-certified sports and clinical dietician who will create customized nutrition solutions for our spotlight families that are simple and easy to follow. Owens is a Registered Dietitian and Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She has 24 years of experience with group presentations and in individual counseling and is the Sports Dietitian at UNC-Greensboro, working as a staff member in Sports Medicine with all athletes.

Ashley Acornley, also of Triangle Nutrition Therapy, is a clinical and sports dietitian and certified personal trainer who will assist Tracy with providing nutrition plans and solutions for the Fit Family Challenge spotlight families and participants. Connect with Triangle Nutrition Therapy on FacebookTwitter and Pinterest.

Gaye Esser, owner of Redefine Balance, will serve as the balance expert for our spotlight families. She will apply the principles of her business to help our spotlight parents find time to meet their individual needs, as well as those of their children. Esser is a certified graduate of Coach U and a Level II Reiki practioner. She works with amazing women to find their bliss and own their happiness from the inside out. She is the author and creator of several coaching programs, including Complete with Kids, a 12-step program designed to help you redefine balance after having children. Connect with Gaye on Facebook and Twitter.
