Lucy Daniels Center Festival Celebrates Reading

Celebrate and inspire your child’s love of reading by attending Bookmarked! 2011, a two-week long festival that promotes the joys of literature. This year, Bookmarked! will feature family-fun activities, book readings by local “celebrity-heroes” and a concert showcasing live children’s music.

Bookmarked! 2011 is sponsored by the Lucy Daniels Center in Cary as part of its Lucy’s Book Club public outreach program that supports healthy and emotional growth in young children by encouraging parents to read books to their kids that approach important developmental themes in a safe and controlled manner.

Festival activities from May 6-22 across Wake County will include various activities at Artsplosure and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, along with a Family Fun Concert featuring live children’s music at Fletcher Park, 802 Clay St., near Cameron Village in Raleigh from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 15.

“At Bookmarked! the center is just saying that reading together is the point,” says parent Karen Taylor who works for the Lucy Daniels Center. “We’re trying to help to further the notion that reading is for the good of the kids.”

As part of the reading celebration, Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh will host a Lucy’s Book Club Fair May 14-15 and May 21-22 that will include a reading on May 14 at 10 a.m. by award-winning author/illustrator Molly Bang. A three-time Caldecott Honor Award winner and recipient of the Lucy Daniels Award, Bang has written and illustrated more than 30 children’s books. Following her presentation, the author will personalize for guests any of her books that were purchased at the book fair. She will also make appearances that same day at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

Most of the events featured at Bookmarked! 2011 are free and open to the public, including more than 30 readings at select preschools, day-care centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs, public libraries and other venues across Wake County.
