Little Moments Count for Quality Family Time

Some families think that they need to schedule large blocks of “family time,” which can put unnecessary pressure on both parents and children. Health professionals at UNC Health Care suggest that, instead, family time can take place more spontaneously and in different ways, such as in ordinary moments like driving a teenager to the mall or reading a toddler a short bedtime story.

One place to start is the dinner table. Even if it’s for only 10 or 15 minutes over pizza or a take-out meal, everyone should make it a priority to sit down together and pay attention to each another. Be sure to turn off the TV and radio and don’t read at the table. Ask questions that help build relationships, not just, “Did you have a good day at school?” but also, “What was good about school today?”

Family dinners are also a good time to begin teaching children to ask you how your day was as well, which helps create empathy in growing children.
