Would you like to take your kids out for fun and help a local family in need? On Saturday, Oct. 17, noon to 6 p.m., Kamado Grille in Raleigh will host Sawyerfest, a fundraiser for Sawyer Powell, a local first grader diagnosed with brain cancer.

The event — to be held in the parking lot of the Kamado Grille at 832 Spring Forest Rd. — will feature inflatables, carnival games, costumed characters, artists, raffles, a silent auction and more. Several local residents and businesses have volunteered their talents to make the fundraiser happen. Musicians Ethan Hanson, Derek Chase, G.W. Pierce, The Leftovers and Jason Adamo will provide entertainment; Heritage Farms, U.S. Food and DeMo's Pizza are donating food.

Sawyer was first diagnosed in preschool, and after having a tumor removed and undergoing six weeks of chemotherapy, his cancer went into remission. But a few weeks ago, the cancer returned. Sawyer is being raised by his dad, Jeb, and his grandmother. Jeb works part-time, and had to drop out of school to care for his son.

Nathan Bartlett, operating partner with Kamado Grill says the company believes in giving back and sharing, whether it is in time or money. “A situation like this touches your heart, and we wanted to do something,” he says.

John Fallon, director of events for Kamado Grill, says 100 percent of proceeds of the fundraiser will go directly to the Sawyer family. He says he’s still looking for volunteers to help with the event as well as items for donation to the silent auction. For details on how to donate or volunteer, go to this link
