Across the nation and the state on Veterans Day, communities, businesses, museums and sites are remembering those who gave their lives and continue to give service to our country.

  • The Town of Cary will host a Veterans Day Remembrance 11 a.m.-noon  Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Veterans Freedom Park, located at 1513 N. Harrison Ave. in Cary. Go for a patriotic ceremony and celebration honoring veterans of all wars and conflicts. Members of the Old North State Brass Band will perform patriotic music and attendants will hear from guest speakers. Take a chair if you'd like to sit. For more information about the event and to read about the guest speakers, please search "Veterans Freedom Park Events" at townofcary.org.
  • The National Restaurant Association has compiled this list of restaurant deals and specials for members of our armed services this Veterans Day.

On Veterans Day, most N.C. historic sites are closed, but all 39 state parks and recreation areas are open and free as usual, so if you are not working and your kids are off from school, this would be a perfect time to explore them. Some other free or low-cost activities in the Triangle include:

  • The N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh is open with usual operations and is free.
  • The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh is open with usual operations. Vets always get a discount on special exhibits. The "Extreme Mammals" exhibit is currently on view. All other exhibits are free.
  • The East Building of the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh will be open, but the West Building will be closed. On Veteran's Day, all veterans and active duty military members and their immediate families will receive free admission to the M.C. Escher and Leonardo da Vinci exhibitions. All other exhibits are free.
