Free K-5 Virtual Education Sampler Available to Triangle-Area Families During Coronavirus School Closures
Thales Academy Students Benefit from Robust Remote Learning Program
Students at Thales Academy, a college preparatory network of Pre-K-12 independent schools, returned last month to their fourth quarter classes after a previously scheduled track-out break, but their classrooms look a bit different now. Determined to keep students on pace to finish their current grades without losing any learning time due to Governor Cooper’s current statewide shutdown of schools, the school designed a robust remote learning program that covers usual lesson topics, includes regular virtual meetings with teachers and classmates, and grades assignments and assessments.
In addition to serving enrolled students this learning program, Thales Academy is offering a free modified version of its online K-5 coursework in a virtual trial module to other Triangle area families so interested parents can continue supporting their child's education from home with a strong virtual resource. This work will not be graded but may be used to sample Thales Academy’s curriculum and to supplement student learning.
The school notes that students do not have to commit to enrolling at a Thales Academy campus to take advantage of this free educational offering. Families interested in the free trial K-5 remote learning opportunity can submit a short request form to gain access to the program.
While the current circumstances and online-only method of instruction are not the usual approach at Thales Academy, the school has worked hard to maintain its high-quality curriculum via thoughtful leveraging of technology in its remote learning program. “Although there was indeed an initial learning curve for everyone to settle into the online classroom setup, we have heard overwhelmingly positive feedback from teachers, parents and students alike," says Josh Herring, Dean of Students, Thales Academy.
Due to the shutdown mandates issued by Governor Cooper, in-person information sessions and tours for Thales Academy campuses have been replaced with virtual options for now. Virtual information sessions are being offered periodically and are posted on the Thales Academy Facebook page. FAQs, admissions information and virtual tours can be found on the Thales Academy website; and personal chats with an admissions counselor can be arranged by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. More discussion about the Thales Academy virtual learning experience can also be found on two recent episodes, "Teaching Classically, Virtually" and "Teaching in the Cloud," of the faculty-produced podcast, "Developing Classical Thinkers," which can be found on Apple Podcasts, Google Play and Spotify.
