Durham husband-and-wife team take a natural approach to home fragrance

When Durham resident Kelly Swimm became pregnant with her first child several years ago, she remembers developing a growing awareness of the safety of everyday products she and her husband, Dan, were using. Even with her medical background as a physical therapist, she was surprised to find that so many of their go-to items — food, cleaning supplies and cosmetics — had toxic chemicals in them.

Slowly, she and her husband transitioned to safer, more natural replacements for just about all of the products they used, except for one: home fragrance.

"I loved the idea of traditional essential oils, but found them expensive, time consuming and pretty basic in their odor," Swimm says. "My husband, who, like his father, worked in the candle industry, was equally amazed at the lack of natural fragrances that smelled real and beautiful. So we decided to make them ourselves."

Swimm says that because no one had really made modern, plant-based fragrances at that time, it took them countless tries to get the fragrances right. After several years of work, they launched their business last, Grow Fragrance, in 2018, and now offer three certified plant-based air and fabric sprays, plus a new fragrance each season. They have created seasonal fragrances for fall and the holidays, and just released one for spring. Later this year, they plan to launch candles.

"Since we started a business from the ground up, we had the opportunity to be mindful of what we were creating. We believe businesses have a social responsibility, so we decided to become a B-corporation," Swimm says. "We are part of the Durham Living Wage Project and donate 1 percent of our total sales to 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses, nonprofits and individuals working together for a healthy planet. We are also proud to be certified cruelty-free."
