Durham School Wins Blue Heron Bowl

North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics students will compete in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl finals in April.

Five students from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham won the Blue Heron Bowl, a regional ocean science academic competition that is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, on Feb. 18. The Blue Heron Bowl, held at UNC-Wilmington, is part of a nationwide competition that tests students’ knowledge of ocean science disciplines through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended, team-challenge questions. Kenneth Xu, Emily Zheng, Raymond Gao, Shiv Patel and Vincent Xia will join winners from 24 other regional bowls April 20-23 at Oregon State University for the NOSB Finals. Updated April 24: The students from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics came in third overall and third in the Scientific Experts Briefing, a mock congressional hearing in which students present science recommendations on a piece of legislation.
