Durham Hosts Holiday Events, Volunteer Opportunities

Durham kicks off its holiday festivities with snow sledding, pony and train rides and more!

Ring in the holidays by heading to Durham Parks and Recreation events where you and your children can craft homemade gifts, socialize at community celebrations and enjoy cookies with Santa. Even Fido has his own party, “Santa Paws,” where canines have their pictures taken with Santa.

Make a Holiday Cracker 
Saturday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m.- noon
West Point on the Eno – Blacksmith Shop Education Center, 5101 N. Roxboro Rd.
Ages 8 and older are invited to make holiday crackers and learn about this popular Victorian holiday tradition. Holiday crackers are not a type of food but a present filled with surprises and a firecracker snap that makes these gifts really pop! Each participant will make two crackers and get a resource list so they can make more at home. Youth age 14 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For more information call 919-471-1623, option #2. Costs ranges from $7 to $13.

*Holiday Fun Fest (FREE)
Saturday, Dec. 5, 1-5 p.m.
Rock Quarry Park, 701 Stadium Dr. 
Rain location: Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver Street
Mark the beginning of the holiday season at Durham’s Holiday Fun Fest with family fun that includes snow sledding (sleds will be provided), Santa visits,  pony rides, trackless train rides, a campfire with S'mores (from 2-3 p.m., or until S'mores are gone), a toddler playground, food and nonfood vendors, entertainment and more.

Make Holiday Gifts With Essential Oils
Sunday, Dec. 6, 1- 3 p.m.
West Point on the Eno – Blacksmith Shop Education Center, 5101 N. Roxboro Rd.
Ages 12 and older are invited to create three lovely, pure aromatic gifts that you can give away this holiday season. The gifts are made with all-natural es­sential oils. For more information call 919-471-1623, option #2. Cost ranges from $7 to $13.

*Santa Paws (FREE)
Friday, Dec. 11, 6-8:30 p.m.
Downtown Durham Armory, 212 Foster St.
Attend Santa Paws and enjoy an evening of holiday fun with your canine friend. Participants can take pictures of their dog with Santa, play games, shop at the holiday pet market, and donate to the dog food and toy drive. For details call 919-560-4355.

Swim With Santa
Saturday, Dec. 12, 5:30 -7 p.m.
Edison Johnson Aquatic Center, 500 West Murray Ave.
NOTE: Space is limited! Participants must register before Dec. 12
Get in the pool and swim with Santa Claus! At this fun family event, children will get to play in the shallow water with Santa, and make holiday-themed arts and crafts projects on the pool deck. Life jackets will be provided as needed. All ages are welcome. An adult must enter the water with children 9 years of age and younger.  For details call 919-560-4265. The cost ranges from $5 to $11.

Cookies with Santa

I.R. Holmes, Sr. Recreation Center at Campus Hills, 2000 S. Alston Ave.
Take your child ages 2 to 5 to meet Santa at one of DPR’s recreation centers. A digital photo of participants posing with Santa will be emailed to you. Participants will also enjoy cookies and milk while working on a holiday art project. You may also take your own camera for additional photos.  For details call 919-560-4444. Christmas Open House (FREE)

Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community and culture centered on seven basic values as building blocks for peace and progress within neighborhoods. This-family friendly event will include entertainment by local and regional artists, cultural enrichment activities, inspirational speakers, food, kids' activities, a community market and more! The event will be held on the fifth day of Kwanzaa and will celebrate the principle of Nia (purpose). All ages. For details call 919-354-2750.
