What do you think of when you hear ‘Valentine’s Day’? Red roses, jewelry, chocolate, romantic dinner? Not me! I think of making Valentine’s gifts for the boys’ classmates and easy treats for a fun dinner at home. I am sure I don’t have to tell you that I am all about fun and easy.

There have been plenty of years when I have gone overboard with favors for the kids at school, a big Valentine’s Day brunch complete with heart-shaped French toast and strawberries. But not this year! This year the goal is quick, easy and FUN!

Here are a few of my favorite DIY Valentine’s Day ideas:

A Valentine for Your Littlest Sweethearts

Making Valentine’s for your little ones or their friends at school is always fun. Anyone who knows me, knows that these must be homemade. That does not, of course, mean they need to be either complex or expensive. It does mean they have to be cute and sugar-free. I am all for special treats, but at a time when everyone else is giving out candy I feel an obligation to make something fun and functional.

My two favorite Dollar Store specials are:

1. Glow Bracelets of Love

Who doesn’t like a glow bracelet?  All you need for this special gift is a pack of glow bracelets, cardstock and a hole punch. Simply create a favor tag by printing “You Light Up a Room! Love, Little Tommy” on your cardstock and cutting out 2 inch by 3 inch rectangles ( about the size of a business card). Then, simply punch holes in opposite corners of the card and insert one bracelet.

2. Rulers of Love

Another practical, yet fun, gift is a colorful ruler and at three for one dollar, you can’t beat the price! All you need to add to each ruler is a favor tag which says “You Rule! Love, Little Mary.” The kids will love having their own ruler for crafting, and parents will be happy it isn’t candy!

Sweet Snacks and Easy Crafts:

Heart-Shaped Cake

Making your own heart shaped cake is much easier than you think, and you don’t even need to buy a heart-shaped baking pan!  Grab your favorite cake mix or recipe and bake in a one 9-inch by 9-inch pan and a 9-inch round pan.  Once the cakes cool, remove them from the pans, place the square cake on your platter in a diamond shape, cut the round cake in half and place 1 half next to both the top right and left edges.  Then frost and enjoy! Your Valentine will be so impressed.

TIP:  Make any boxed cake mix extra moist cake by using whole or buttermilk instead of water.

Mini Heart Cakes

If making your own heart-shaped cake is still a little too daunting, have no fear. Your local kitchen or home goods store surely has adorable heart-shaped muffin tins. These are perfect for so many Valentine’s Goodies:

With so many uses, a heart-shaped muffin tin is something you can use year-round for countless DIY activities. Heck, you can even use it as a serving tray for sundae toppings on your ice cream sundae bar.

Think Outside of the Box

When you are looking for Valentine’s favor boxes, bags, decorations or party ware, save yourself some money by looking beyond the Valentine’s Day isle at the party supply store.
