As budget cuts to Smart Start-a state program that provides kids from birth to age 5 with health and education-have begun to hit home, Triangle communities are rallying behind efforts to help children.

Kidcycle Consignment Sale will be hosting two special August events at University Mall in Chapel Hill.-a Diaper Drop and a Dollar Day-to benefit Welcome Baby, which provides parenting education and support to families with young children in Durham.

The Diaper Drop allows shoppers to donate diapers at any time during Kidcycle’s sale, which will be held Aug 12-Aug.14. As an extra incentive, Kidcycle will hold a special preview event on Aug. 11, when a diaper donation is required to enter. You can drop off items for sale on Aug. 5-6. All of the diapers collected will go to needy Durham families through Welcome Baby. On Dollar Day on Aug. 20, shoppers can buy remaining merchandise for $1 an item. All proceeds from the day’s sales will be donated to Welcome Baby and will be used to fund special initiatives such as Cribs for Kids.

The need to help children in Durham is growing as the recession brings unemployment and the number of children living in the county rises. Since 2000, Durham County’s population of young children birth to 5 years of age has increased by more than 30 percent, according to Durham’s Partnership for Children, an initiative of Smart Start.

A Durham and Orange county-based consignment business, Kidcycle provide buyers gently used children’s products that might otherwise go to the landfill. Kidcycle Co-owner Michelle Old said in a statement that the sale is a way to support members of a community. “We think of our sale as a means for parents to help other parents,” she said.
