Combs Elementary Student Fights Hunger

Last year, when 8-year-old William Winslow learned that kids from food-insecure homes might not have enough meals donated by his school’s BackPack Buddies Program during spring break, he organized a weekend food drive. With the generous help of a grocer, restaurant and individuals in his community, William collected more than 1,400 pounds of food and $305 in cash donations.

“The money went to buy new backpacks and other things needed for the children in the BackPack Buddies Program,” he says. “I couldn’t have done it without local businesses supporting me and all of the donations from my community.”

William is spearheading another food drive this spring and wants to help more schools in the future. He recently won a $50 Kohl’s gift card from the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program, which rewards young volunteers across the country for contributions to their communities.
