What were you doing in 1988? I was a sophomore in high school turning 16; a member of the basketball, volleyball, track and debate teams; and super excited about getting my driver’s license. I knew I wanted to get married and have children someday, but those were distant dreams involving responsibilities I wouldn’t face until sometime after my college years.

While I was taking algebra and learning the finer points of how to create poufy ’80s bangs, two Triangle moms — Gita Schonfeld and Bobbi Matchar — decided over coffee one morning that Triangle parents needed a publication offering local events for children, camp listings and parenting advice. A few months later, Carolina Parent was born.

In September, Carolina Parent commemorated 30 years of serving the Triangle by publishing an anniversary issue that celebrates the magic Schonfeld and Matchar created 30 years ago. In our special anniversary section, we explored Carolina Parent’s fascinating history in Caitlin Wheeler’s story about how the Triangle’s most valued parenting resource has evolved over the years to meet the needs of each new generation of parents.

Samantha Gratton introduced us to Triangle moms who were born in 1988 — and now have children of their own. These moms discuss how parenting has changed since they were kids, and what hopes, dreams and worries they have as their children grow up in this new digital age.

We took a walk down memory lane as Mandy Howard looked back at 1988 trends in the Triangle and around the nation. And the spotlight turned to you, our readers, as you provided insight on 30 ways parenting has changed since 1988. Our staff chimed in on this subject as well. (You’ll get a kick out of our 1988 photos!)

Other features covered treating youth sports injuries in a feature written by Kurt Dusterberg and Special Olympics’ 50th anniversary in a piece by Laura Lacy. We hope you enjoyed our special look back at 1988! Now, let’s get ready for the next 30 years. Carolina Parent will be with you and your family all the way!
