Campout! Carolina to Support North Carolina’s Environment
Gather your camping equipment, turn off nonessential electrical items, and pitch a tent with the family during the fifth annual Campout! Carolina Oct. 7-9. Camp at your favorite North Carolina campsite or even in your backyard and join thousands of families, scout troops, church groups, community groups and other individuals participating in this annual statewide campout to collectively demonstrate the importance of protecting and preserving North Carolina’s environment.
Campout! Carolina is sponsored by EarthShare North Carolina, a coalition of 63 nonprofit organizations working locally throughout the state, nationally and internationally to preserve and protect natural resources and wildlife.
During Campout! Carolina, participants can plan and take part in activities such as scavenger hunts, nature walks or playing flashlight tag and other games.
Campers are encouraged to protect the environment by using recyclable camping products, reusing metal and other containers, leaving the land and wildlife as it was before they visited, and demonstrating other environmentally friendly practices.
To organize a campout, visit the Campout! Carolina website at www.campoutcarolina.org for a list of campsites across the state. Find sites at state parks and KOA campgrounds, as well as through websites such as www.reserveamerica.com, www.gocampingamerica.com and www.trails.com. Register your campout on the Campout! Carolina website to be counted, which provides EarthShare North Carolina with an accurate tally of the number of participants.
Registered campers are entered into a drawing for prizes, which include an REI Kingdom 6 Tent and two four-day passes to the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Fall Festival of Music and Dance in Chatham County.
REI stores are offering free camping gear rentals, on a first-come, first-serve basis for the weekend of Campout! Carolina. To reserve gear, contact any REI store in North Carolina.
