A unique, global learning opportunity awaits your child at Smith Magnet Elementary. All students are empowered to become inquirers and life-long learners through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Student learning moves naturally across six transdisciplinary themes, and children are encouraged to look beyond themselves to see the world with wonder and curiosity. Recently, students examined global markets with Virtual Reality Simulators. Through investigation, they found similarities and differences between the wants and needs of other cultures. Inquiry-based lessons teach Smith students how to think about challenges in other parts of the world and communicate solutions.

Smith students also have the option to enroll in a Dual Language Spanish Immersion program. English and Spanish speaking students gain proficiency in two languages by conversing and learning academic and social language throughout the day. Dani Ardila, a Kindergarten Immersion teacher from Colombia, South America says, “I can share my beautiful culture and language with my students. We have so much fun getting to dance, sing and play together as we learn the Spanish language.”

The immersion program builds communication skills, strengthens global awareness and is the perfect addition to the IB Programme. Megan Kidd, the parent of a kindergartener says, “I’m so glad my son is able to participate in the immersion program at Smith…he’s already starting to speak in Spanish, and I’m also learning some key phrases, thanks to him.” Tracy Taylor, another Smith parent says, “the immersion teachers are a dream team. They are incredibly dynamic. [My son] loves both teachers and is eager to go to school each day.”
