6 Pet-Friendly Events Make for a Fun October

Cats and dogs have options for outings this October when Triangle venues host pet-friendly events that include races, costume contests and festivals.

1. â€‹Run for Their Lives 5K

Oct. 1 – SAFE Haven for Cats, 8431-137 Garvey Dr., Raleigh. 8:30 a.m.-noon. $20/person. Take part in either a competitive race or a recreational run to benefit SAFE Haven for Cats. 2. Barktoberfest

Oct. 16 – Rock Quarry Park, 701 Stadium Dr., Durham. Free. Noon-4 p.m. A celebration of all things canine includes a costume contest and parade, “Muttalica” dog show, Treibball competition and demo, Skyhounds Canine Disc State Championship, games and more. durhamnc.gov/2698/barktoberfest

3. BeagleFest

Oct. 22 – Sunny Acres Pet Resort, 5908 Hwy. 70 East, Durham. 1-4 p.m. $5/person admission fee; additional fees vary per activity. Free for kids ages 4 and younger and dogs. 4. Dogtoberfest

Oct. 22 – Ashley Wilder Dog Park, 801 N. First Ave., Knightdale. Noon-3 p.m. Free. Families and their dogs enjoy a canine costume contest, 2-mile fun walk/run, vendors and agencies showcasing pets for adoption. knightdalenc.gov/index.aspx?page=753

5. Canine Contests

Oct. 29 – Crowder District Park, 4709 Ten-Ten Rd., Apex. 1-3 p.m Free. Dogs show off their best tricks and costumes in a day devoted to man’s best friend. wakegov.com/parks/crowder

6. Paws for Life 5K Road Race and Dog Walk/Costume Parade

Oct. 29 – Wake Forest College Birth Place, 450 N. Main St., Wake Forest. 10 a.m.-1p.m. See website for fees. Humans take part in a 5K race, followed by a 1-mile dog walk and costume parade for participants, family members and their dogs. Costumes are encouraged. Kid- and pet-friendly activities round out the fun. Proceeds benefit the Franklin County Human Society. Register online for the 5K at facebook.com/events/1708733372705165.
