The Bourne Legacy, Two Sweet Films for Little Kids

August 15, 2012 7:46 pm
THE BOURNE LEGACY (Approx. running time: approx. 135 minutes)
Rated PG-13 Starring Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton

Wow! I thought the Jason Bourne movies were complicated but this one takes the cake. The film held my attention as I tried to keep up with the complex story unfolding before me. Aaron Cross (Renner) is an agent of a special program, similar to the Treadstone secret mission group. He is controlled by medication that keeps his strength above human levels and his intelligence as well.

Flashbacks fill us in on how the program administered the drugs but we don't know until the end what they were supposed to do. Ed Norton plays the evil "research" team leader who pulls the plug on this program, foreshadowing the death of all the hitmen and women involved.

Aaron Cross is the only one to escape. He has to fend off a pack of hungry wolves in the frozen wilds of Alaska along with a drone plane set to destroy him. For various reasons I'm omitting so I don't spoil the entire movie, the doctor who administered some of these "test" drugs ends up on the run along with Cross. Together they share a harrowing escape involving amazing chases punctuated with brilliant planning and spontaneous problem solving that will make your head spin.

Although The Bourne Legacy is quite long, I found it fast-paced with rarely a dull moment or a wasted word. There was plenty of violence but almost no blood. No cursing and no sex, either. This is a pure action thriller in the same vein at the earlier Bourne movies taken from stories by Robert Ludlum. This story was not written by him but was also tightly plotted and exciting. It is best for children 12 and over as it's too complicated and long for younger kids.

Searching for more movies for younger children, these two movies popped up as a good choice.

THE ARISTOCATS (Approx. running time:79 minutes)

DVD Animated with the voices of Eva Gabor, Scatman Crothers, Phil Harris
A cute movie about cats inheriting money from their rich owner. The butler tries to steal the inheritance and kidnap the cats. They are saved by a band of "cool" cats. Great music distinguishes this fun, classic 1970 kids movie from others of the same era. While the plot isn't that engrossing the singing is. Introduce your children to some great tunes painlessly. Aristocats is a perfect movie for children of all ages.

THE LAND BEFORE TIME (Approx. running time: 69 minutes)
DVD

Although an earthquake kills the parents of our young hero, Little Foot, this charming 1988 movie doesn't dwell on their deaths. Instead, other young dinos separated from their parents join together to find The Great Valley. Their journey is fraught with danger, laughs and a growing camaraderie among the different species. This sweet film is great for kids of all ages.
