Raising a family and working for a company at the same time can pull a parent in opposite directions toward different goals. As parents, we want to be there for our children when they are sick, attend their school functions, help them with homework and cheer for them at after-school activities. As employees, we want to give our full attention, creativity and enthusiasm to our work to produce quality and keep our company ahead of the competition.

Many companies in North Carolina are helping parents to pursue both goals by offering them a flexible work environment, generous benefits, innovative programs and other perks. Who are they?

For 14 years, Carolina Parenting Inc.—which owns Carolina Parent, Charlotte Parent and Piedmont Parent—has highlighted companies that support and encourage working parents in North Carolina through family-friendly policies. On Wednesday, Carolina Parenting Inc. announced the 2012 N.C. Family-Friendly 50 companies, including seven companies that received the honor for the first time and three companies that made the list for 14 consecutive years. Learn about this year's honorees, and explore their companies profiles here.

Companies appearing on the list for the first time include Coastal Federal Credit Union (multiple locations throughout the state); Coleman Lew + Associates Inc. (Charlotte); Copernicus Group IRB (Research Triangle Park); Inmar (Winston-Salem); Kao Specialties America (High Point); Olive Law Firm (Charlotte); and Workplace Options (Raleigh). Lyerly Agency in Charlotte with six employees, Replacements Ltd. in Greensboro with 448 employees, and Rex Healthcare in the Triangle with more than 5,000 employees have received the honor since the program's inception.

Honored companies provided information about their benefits and programs, which was then reviewed by senior associate directors from the undergraduate and graduate business programs at UNC Kenan-Flager Business School in Chapel Hill. The final list of companies was determined in partnership with the business school. Congratulations to the 2012 Family-Friendly 50 honorees. We applaud their efforts to help working parents through the challenges and rewards of raising children.
