Celebrate the Chinese New Year Festival on Saturday

Publish On 01-22-2009 , 16:52

RALEIGH – Welcome the Year of the Bull at the Triangle's largest Chinese New Year Festival on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 from 9 a.m. to  6 p.m. at the State Fairgrounds, Exposition Center in Raleigh. The event is open to the public and will include stage performances, a talent competition open to audience members, food for sampling and sale, exhibits for all ages, and a 30-year timeline marking Chinese Americans' contributions to the Triangle.

Throughout the day, you'll find four dancing Chinese lions, a swirling dragon, cultural performances by Asian groups who celebrate Lunar New Year (Chinese GuZheng and Er-Hu music, Japanese Taiko drumming, Korean fan dance) as well as crowd pleasers like the Bouncing Bulldogs and Durham Bulls Mascot, Wool E. Bull. There will also be arts and crafts for younger children, tea sampling, an art and essay contest for school kids, and a talent competition.

Along with a Gourmet Street featuring authentic regional foods of China, there will be Crafts Alley and Village Square. Children's activity stations will include the BeActiveNC van, Chinese yo-yo lessons, New Year tattoos, and more. Adults can learn Chinese cooking and floral arrangement.
The first 200 paying attendees to arrive will be entered into a raffle for prizes including Durham Bulls' tickets and other gift cards.

Chinese New Year – the Year of the Bull in the Chinese zodiac – officially begins on Jan. 26, 2009; this Festival is held early at the Fairgrounds to accommodate the large level of interest. General admission to the Festival is $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Children 6 and under enter for free. Tickets, the performance schedule, and history of Chinese New Year are available online through
www.nctacas.org.
