Spend a Night Under the Stars

Join other families across the country and support the National Wildlife Federation by celebrating the 7th annual Great American Backyard Campout June 25, 2011. The fundraising event encourages parents and kids to trade screen time for green time by spending a night under the stars. Participants can donate to the NWF or ask others to sponsor their camping expedition.

In the past two decades, childhood has literally moved indoors with kids spending more than seven hours per day in front of electronic media. The average American child now spends just four to seven minutes outside in unstructured play each day, according to NWF, but studies show that time outdoors helps children grow lean and strong, enhances creativity and attention spans, decreases aggression and boosts classroom performance.

Join friends at a local campground or at a large community camping event. You can register your team of campers, join other teams of campers or check out campsites across the country by visiting http://online.nwf.org.

Register your campout on the NWF website to get camping tips such as recipes, nocturnal wildlife guides, campfire songs and games, and nature activities.
