Is the Goodnight Moon story by Margaret Wise Brown a favorite in your home? Brown's soothing words and gentle rhymes were often part of my children's bedtime routine, helping them unwind and get ready to fall asleep. This year, on the 60th anniversary of Brown's passing, Parragon Books is releasing five "lost" titles from the author, beginning with the stories of Count to 10 With A Mouse and Goodnight Little One.
Like Goodnight Moon, the new titles are picture books perfect for story time, bedtime, and beginning readers. Their illustrations, by Kristin Richards and Rebecca Elliott, are designed to evoke Brown's style and spirit. The little donkey and his friends in Goodnight Little One help children settle down to sleep, and in Count To Ten With a Mouse, they learn counting skills by reading along an adorable, adventurous mouse.
Count to 10 With A Mouse, which is in print for the first time, and Goodnight Little One are now available online at Amazon.com and at Barnes and Noble, Indigo, Walmart, Kroger, and many other stores for a suggested retail price of $7.99. This August, look for three more of Brown's books: Around the World We Go, The Sleepy Bears, and Sleep Little Child.
Before her death in 1952 at the age of 42, Brown wrote hundreds of books and pioneered the idea that children would rather read about the simple pleasure in their own lives than fantasies and fables. A former teacher, she frequented classrooms observing what children liked to read and used her research to create books with a childlike perspective.
