What's the best gift you can give a mom, especially one with young kids? I'd say the companion of moms who, like her, are going through the challenges of parenting while trying to maintain their sanity and identify.
A 2012 book, How to Spread Sanity on a Cracker: Mom-to-mom whines, cheese, rants and recipes, serves up just such true stories from moms across the U.S. Each vignette written by a mom is accompanied by an easy recipe for moms to serve when they gather to commiserate. The book covers hilarious stories where moms reveal their less-than-perfect motherhood moments that include musings on breast milk letdowns (pun intended) and tales of a missing baby, coping with cross-country relocation and play dates gone bad.
The author, Jackie Hennessey, is a self-described imperfect work-from-home mother of two, who says she managed to keep her sanity by venting with other moms. "Throw in a cheese dip present, it's free therapy, she says. "This is the inspiration behind How to Spread Sanity on a Cracker. I wrote it with the intention of being a short-fun-to-read gift book filed with whines and easy, but tasty, cheese dip recipes that can be consumed in real mommy time, in between laundry, feeding and naptime."
If you know of a new mom who can't drum up the energy to leave the house to meet with friends, this book will provide some laughs that might just motivate her to reclaim a small piece of her life to call her own.
