Herbal therapies might seem safe, but they’re not regulated by the FDA and many contain chemicals that can cross the placenta and cause premature labor or birth defects. In particular, watch out for these:

Hellebore
Used for: Morning sickness
May cause: Miscarriage, cleft lip, birth defects


Raspberry leaf
Used for: Morning sickness
May cause: Miscarriage, premature labor

St. John’s Wort
Used for: Depression
May cause: Premature labor, anemia

Tragacanth
Used for: Constipation or diarrhea
May cause: Miscarriage

Echinacea
Used for: Colds
May cause: Birth defects if taken in large amounts

Golden seal
Used for: Colds
May cause: Premature labor

Feverfew
Used for: Headaches and migraines
May cause: Premature labor, birth defects

Juniper
Used for: Heartburn
May cause: Miscarriage, premature labor

Blue cohosh
Used for: Inducing labor
May cause: Heart defects, birth defects, infant death
