Fun Things to Do This Weekend in the Triangle, Oct. 6-8
The Celebrate Fuquay-Varina Festival is just one reason to get out with the family this weekend.

We finally have the cooler, drier air that heralds fall, so it's time to enjoy outdoor activities with the family this weekend. Take a short drive to Wendell for the town's Harvest Festival, or head to Fuquay-Varina for the Celebrate Fuquay-Varina Festival. Step back in time at Heritage Day in Raleigh. If live music is more your style, check out Kids Rock 2017 in Chapel Hill or Music in the Plaza in downtown Durham.
This event dates back to 1927, so Wendell obviously knows how to throw a festival. Born from the town's roots in farming as a celebration of harvest time, the festival has evolved into what it is today: music, dancing, arts, great food, a parade, a tractor pull, a pumpkin derby and more. The action starts on Friday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 9 a.m. The party winds down at 10 p.m. both nights. Catch the Friday Night Family Movie — "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" — at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and the legendary beach music band The Embers on Saturday at 7 p.m. All of this activity takes place in and around Wendell Town Square.

Check out this quaint historic downtown district during the Celebrate Fuquay-Varina Festival. It takes place Saturday, Oct. 7, 10 a.m.-4p.m., and you'll be able to check out the Artist Village, taste (and vote on!) chili from more than 20 competitors in the Downtown Chili Cook-off. View more than 50 classic cars, watch a gravity-defying BMX Bike Show, enjoy musical acts in the craft beverage area featuring local breweries and boutique wines, listen to the Landsharks band in concert and much more. Admission is FREE. A map and schedule of activities and performances is available here.

Live music, games and food for the family in CCB Plaza in the heart of downtown Durham — sounds a recipe for fun to me! Kids eat FREE and the whole family can listen to live music presented by The Music Lab with Mr. Steve. Grownups can taste from among 60-plus taps of Triangle craft brews, ciders and wines and enjoy a selection of sandwiches and snacks from Pour Taproom. Costs for adult foods and beverages will vary. Music in the Plaza is 5-7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 8.
