Celebrate North Carolina’s food heritage this weekend at the free Pork, Pickles and Peanuts festival in Durham. Sample homegrown tomatoes and live music at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market’s “Tomato Day” festivities. Enjoy a free blues concert in Durham and the Carolina Hurricanes Summerfest  Celebration in Raleigh.

Free Blues Concert
Kick your weekend off with a free concert when Amythyst Kiah and Her Chest of Glass opens the Warehouse Blues Series, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Friday, July 8, at Durham Central Park. Kiah, from Johnson City, Tennessee, is a Southern Gothic, alternate-country blues singer-songwriter who fuses traditional roots music with a contemporary style. The annual Warehouse Blues Series also features local food trucks, beer and dancing at the Pavilion.

Pork, Pickles and Peanuts Festival
Celebrate North Carolina food culture and history at the free Pork, Pickles and Peanuts festival at Duke Homestead, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, July 9, in Durham. As barbecue and pie contests get underway, visitors are invited to taste the barbecue and pick a winner. Take your kids to learn about historical cooking from costumed interpreters at the Duke House.

Tomato Day Fun
Love tomatoes? Head to the Carrboro Farmers’ Market to celebrate “Tomato Day” Saturday, July 9, starting at 8:30 a.m. Sample a variety of tomatoes; enjoy kids' activities and live music by Mark Simonsen and Gabriel Pelli; and hear Craig LeHouillier, author of "Epic Tomatoes."

Raleigh Little Theatre's Art in the Garden Festival

Don’t miss Raleigh Little Theatre’s Art in the Garden Festival, featuring a jury-selected lineup of visual artists, food trucks and live entertainment noon-7 p.m. Sunday, July 10. The family-friendly outdoor festival set in the historic Raleigh Rose Garden on the grounds of Raleigh Little Theatre benefits the theater. Professional puppeteer Don Becker will be selling his puppets.

Historic Crafts at Local Museums
The North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh's free drop-in program, “Make It, Take It: Bead It”, 1-3 p.m., Saturday July 9, invites visitors to watch bead artist Eric Ennis at work and to try their hand at making a simple bead pin. The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh invites guests to learn about ancient vessels and create small pots with air-dry clay, 10 a.m.-noon, and 1-3 p.m., Saturday, July 9. Tickets are required at a cost of $5 for museum members and $8 for nonmembers. Register online.

Carolina Hurricanes Summerfest Celebration
The Carolina Hurricanes Summerfest Celebration, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., July 9, at PNC Arena in Raleigh will feature inflatables, games and an autograph session with team prospects. Hear from Hurricanes guest speakers, and enjoy giveaways and appearances by Stormy and the Storm Squad. Parking and admission are free.

Children's Matinee Dance Performance
American Dance Festival features a Hubbard Street Dance-Chicago, children’s matinee performance, 1 p.m., July 9. The hour-long show is followed by a free Kids’ Party in the Durham Performing Arts Center lobby, complete with live music, face-painting, snacks and additional activities. Tickets cost $16.
