Wake Magnet School Fair Offers New Choice Nov. 5
If you have a child headed to a Wake County high school in the next year or two, you'll want to attend Wake County Public School System's magnet school fair from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, located at 2600 Rock Quarry Road, in Raleigh.
The fair is a great way to discover which school best fits your child's interests, talents and personality. As we parents know, a school setting that works for one sibling may not work for another. The fair offers a chance to look at the specialized areas that magnets offer to see if any appeal to your child. You'll also meet the schools' principals, teachers and students and come away with a better idea of which schools' open houses you'd like to attend.
One new school option that parents and students can explore at the fair is the school system's new single-gender leadership academies for students in grades six through 13, which will be available fall 2012. Ideally, half of Wake Leadership Academy students will be first-generation college bound, according to information from Wake County Public School System (WCPSS). Under a tentative agreement now being developed by WCPSS and William Peace University which will be presented to their respective boards, the Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy? and the Wake Young Men's Leadership Academy? will be located on the Peace campus. Applications for the Wake Leadership Academy will be available online beginning Nov. 5 and are due no later than Friday, Jan. 13. Notifications of selection will begin in February 2012.
If you're interested in applying to a magnet school for your child, you'll need to get an application at www.wcpss.net/magnet? between Dec. 5 and 19, 2011.
