Jan. 26, 2018 update: This workshop has been canceled due to a snow makeup day for the public school students. Organizers are hoping to announce a rescheduled date soon.
Durham employers looking to hire summer staff will have an opportunity to interview hundreds of teens and young adults during this month’s SummerWork Youth Job Expo.
The expo, previously scheduled for Jan. 16, has been moved to a later date this month due to the impact of January’s winter weather, and the Durham Public Schools make-up day that is now on Jan. 16. This job expo will now take place on Wednesday, Jan. 31, which is an early-release day for Durham Public Schools. The event will be held at Hillside High School, at 3727 Fayetteville St., 3-5 p.m. Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Each year hundreds of youth ages 14-24 attend this expo to seek summer employment and internship opportunities in order to gain work experiences, build resumes, and earn income for themselves and their families. The expo also provides job readiness workshops and a job fair for young adults while providing an opportunity for employers to recruit their summer staff. Door prize drawings for youth in attendance will also occur at the end of the job expo.
As part of the expo, employers will have an opportunity to make a short presentation to a large youth audience about their companies and available positions beginning at 3 p.m. Following this session, the job fair will begin where employers can provide handouts and information about their organizations and available positions along with demos, displays and giveaways. Tables and chairs will be provided and there is no cost to employers to participate. Employers interested in participating can now register to attend online.
