This weekend in the Triangle, catch the movie “Toy Story” and have a toy exchange at the Stanford L. Warren Branch Library in Durham, paddle the millpond at Historic Yates Mill County Park in Raleigh, enjoy the Dragon Boat Festival in Cary and start a nature journal with help from guides at Prairie Ridge Ecostation in Raleigh.

A Celebration of Toys FREE

On Sept. 21, 10:30 a.m.-noon, bring your preschooler to the Stanford L. Warren Branch Library in Durham to watch the movie “Toy Story.” Bring in some of their gently-loved toys for a fun exchange among friends after the movie. Preregister here.

Recreational Adventures: Paddle the Pond

Learn basic canoeing skills and a bit about the history of the millpond at Raleigh’s Historic Yates Mill County Park, then head out to explore the pond's many features as seen only from the water. Canoes, paddles and life jackets are provided, along with launch assistance. Set for Sept. 22 for 9-10 a.m. or 11 a.m.-noon, the program is dependent on suitable weather conditions. This activity is designed for ages 5 and older and the fee is $10 per boat. Each canoe can hold up to four people (800-pound total weight limit). Preregistration by boat is required and all participants must sign a program waiver.

Dragon Boat Festival

Check out nearly 100 exhibits and activities such as dragon boat races, cultural displays, Asian food delicacies, games, health screenings and stage performances at the Dragon Boat Festival, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary. Tickets cost less if purchased in advance. Tickets for ages 13 and older are $5 in advance or $8 at the gate, seniors are $4 in advance and $7 at the gate, and kids 12 and younger are free.

Autumnal Equinox Nature Journaling FREE

Welcome to fall! To kick off the season, Prairie Ridge Ecostation is hosting a nature journaling session Sept. 23, 2-3 p.m. Attendees will learn about the autumnal equinox then take a nature walk toward the pond. Make observations, write your thoughts about the new season, make leaf rubbings and more. Participants will receive their own nature journal to take home and continue their journal throughout the fall season. This is a drop-in, outdoor program appropriate for kids with their parents, so supplies will be limited. Come dressed appropriately to be outdoors for the entire program. Meet at the Outdoor Classroom. Pre-registration is required for this program. Email trent.stanforth@naturalsciences.org with the names of everyone in your group and the ages of anyone under 18 by 9 a.m. Sept. 22 to register for the program.
