School Options in the Triangle

K-12 education options are plentiful in the Triangle. Many public, private and charter schools serve the area’s expanding student population. Currently, more than 258,500 children in Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Orange and Wake counties attend public schools, and more than 24,500 in those counties attend private schools. There are also flourishing home-school communities in those areas. Here’s a snapshot of local education figures. Chapel-Hill Carrboro City Schools is consistently ranked at or near the top of school districts in North Carolina in many academic measures, including test performance, graduation rates and SAT/ACT scores. Durham Public Schools is one of the top 10 largest school districts in the state and serves students in the city and county of Durham. Wake County Public School System is the largest school system in the state and the 15th largest in the nation. Its population has almost tripled since 1980, and at least 9,000 additional children are expected by 2020.

The largest private schools in Wake County are Cardinal Gibbons High School, North Raleigh Christian Academy and Ravenscroft School, each located in Raleigh with an enrollment of more than 1,150 students. Durham County's largest private school is Durham Academy, with an enrollment of more than 1,200 students.
