School Choice Selection Kicks Off for Wake Parents
After two years of contentious debate, Wake County Public School System's choice-based student assignment plan becomes a reality today, allowing parents to choose a new WCPSS school for their child to attend next year.
The new assignment plan moves Wake County public schools away from its long-standing practice of busing students for socio-economic diversity and comes after many public hearings and demonstrations by people concerned that the change would create schools with high poverty levels and low academic standards.
Starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, parents can log onto the WCPSS student assignment website at assignment.wcpss.net, enter their address and see which options are available to their kids for next school year based on their home address. Under the choice plan, parents must rank their choices for next school year from a list of at least five elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools.
Today starts the first round of the choice selection period, which runs until Friday. Feb. 24. During this time, families who are new or returning to the school system, parents of rising kindergartners and parents who want to change schools for next year may make their choices through the website. According to WCPPS, families that register their choices earlier in the selection process won't have any advantage over families that choose at a later date. First-round selection results will arrive by mail by Mar. 16. A second choice selection round will open on Mar. 19.
Parents of rising kindergartners and students who do not attend WCPSS this year must pre-enroll their child at a nearby school or at WCPSS Central Office. You can find information about required documentation at assignment.wcpss.net/enroll/newcomer. Parents will be given at least five school options providing traditional or year-round calendars, and must rank their top five preferences for their child.
Parents of rising first through 12th graders received notices of their preliminary school assignments in November. If they like their assignment, they won't have to do anything. But if they would like to change schools, they can choose from one to five schools, but must only pick schools for which they would be willing to leave their current assignment.
