Saying Good-Bye to a Carolina Parent Legend
Carolina Parent Art Director of 26 Years Retires
Cheri Vigna prepared her final post-press tea for Carolina Parent in July.
On August 7, the Carolina Parent staff will say good-bye to a legend. Cheri Vigna, our art director of 26 years and creator of the beautiful magazine spreads you read each month, will embark on a new adventure called "retirement."
While we will miss her positive, vibrant and nurturing presence in our office dearly, as well as her delectable treats and appetizers, post-press tea time sandwiches and desserts, and stories about her adorable grandson, August, we are happy and excited for her as she prepares to spend more time doing the things she loves with her family.
Cheri, where do we begin? We will miss so many things about you! Here are a few favorite staff memories representing how much you mean to us, and how much we will miss you.
"My best memories of Cheri have to do with gorgeous flowers and beautiful cakes and pastries. She loved to share her talent for baking exquisite pastries and tarts with all of us, and entering her office was always an opportunity to step into her world, where flowers always bloom."
— Odile Fredericks, web editor
"I remember the day she brought in the Death by Chocolate cake. It's the most decadent chocolate cake I've ever had. The flavor was so intense that the entire office smelled of chocolate for about a week. More times than I can count, she created a last-minute ad design for a new client, including one just last week. She always went above and beyond by creating not just one, but multiple designs for the client to consider. Her goal was to create something attractive that would satisfy the client's needs.
— Candi Griffin, sales team leader
"When I first started and we had the Women@Work event, we were setting up and I didn't know any of you at the time, so I was checking you all out. Well Cheri took over the bag stuffing and was telling everyone, "This goes here, this goes here, no don't do that, etc. ... I thought, well, she's bossy. Then after a few weeks, I was sitting in the office across from here, I could hear and see how she interacted with people, and she would stop by and chat with me and it wasn't bossy, she was like the caring momma; and took great pride in her work."
— Regina Alson, media consultant
"It goes without saying, but I'll always appreciate how Cheri went out of her way to make us feel extra special for a tea or on our birthday. I'll cherish those times forever. Oh, and how she teased me about 'Blue Eyes.'"
— Janice Lewine, associate editor
"It's well known among the Carolina Parent staff that Cheri is an amazing baker. Even at staff potluck-style holiday gatherings, Cheri brings not just one but three desserts: an authentic bûche de Noël, a Martha Stewart peppermint cake and an impressive selection of decorated sugar cookies. No Pillsbury slice-and-dice here!"
— Lauren Isaacs, media specialist
"I have worked with various art directors throughout my career, but Cheri corners the market on organization and punctuality. She has kept me on time — and on my toes — and offers grounded and helpful advice when I need it. I think most of all, I'll miss how she has taken care of all of us and added beauty and color to Carolina Parent — in print, online and on the lunch table with her delicious dishes."
