Have you taken your little ones to a farmers market? A trip with mom or dad to buy fresh produce can become a wonderful memory for your children and an exploration of new colors, smells, foods and even a math lesson, if you want it to be.
Spring brings the reopening of seasonal farmers markets, and this week, the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market returns Wednesday, May 4, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in City Plaza with its Carolina Kickoff event. Enjoy grab-and-go lunches from The Pit Authentic Barbecue, a beer-tasting with Foothills Brewing Company, and live music from Dark Water Rising. Kids can go on a scavenger hunt, following clues gained by talking to farmers and vendors, and, if they complete all the tasks, they will receive a small prize.
The market is open every Wednesday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., through Sept. 28. Shop for goods from 40 rotating vendors that include North Carolina farmers, ranchers, fisherman, nurserymen, bakers, cheese makers, specialty food producers and craftsmen. This season, you'll find these 10 new local farmers and makers: Alora’s Soaps & Stuff, Bluegrass Farm, C.V. Pilson, Homemade Kombucha, Jones Farm, NC Soap Opera Company, Rare Earth Farms, Sweet Peas Urban Garden, The Bath Place and Treat.
