Nov. 23-25: Wood Games, a History Hike, a Fencing Class and a Fall Scavenger Hunt

This weekend in the Triangle, enjoy the beauty of William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh with the park's Wood Games program, hike around the old farmstead at Historic Oak View County Park in Raleigh, take a free fencing class held at the Mid-South Fencers Club in Durham, and explore Prairie Ridge Ecostation in Raleigh as you search for and photograph plants and animals in a scavenger hunt.
Wood Games FREE
Join Ranger Billy at William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh and have fun in the woods at the park seeking, searching, hiding and playing games that will increase your awareness of what makes the park naturally wonderful. The activity takes place Nov. 23 from 1-2:30 p.m. and starts at the park’s Visitor Center. Preregister by calling 919-571-4170, as space is limited. Join staff at Historic Oak View County Park in Raleigh for a hike through the old farmstead Nov. 24, 11 a.m.-noon. See and learn about all of the buildings and features of the park and participate in hands-on interactive activities. Learn more about what life was like growing up at Oak View and how farm life has changed in our area from the mid-19th century until today. This program is suited to participants aged 5 and up. Preregistration is required.

Have you ever considered trying out the fast-paced and exciting sport of Olympic fencing? This is a great no-obligation way to do it. Join talented coaches for an hour-long introduction to fencing for families with kids ages 7 and older Nov. 24, 2-3 p.m., at the Mid-South Fencers Club in downtown Durham. Wear closed-toe shoes and pants you can move comfortably in that won’t split if you lunge. Preregister here.

Fall Scavenger Hunt FREE
Join staff at Prairie Ridge Ecostation in Raleigh Nov. 25 for a fun scavenger hunt. Explore the grounds, learn fun facts about local plants and animals and take pictures of the interesting things you find. Make sure to dress for the weather and wear clothes suitable for walking around outside. The program runs from 2-3 p.m. and is intended for families with young children. Meet at the entry kiosk. No preregistration is required.
