North Carolina Third-Grader Wins Cabbage Contest
Alyssa Bloomer of Dallas, N.C., is $1,000 closer to paying for college, thanks to a giant cabbage.
Each year, Bonnie Plants, a producer of vegetable and herb plants in North America, delivers free, oversized cabbage plants to third-grade teachers who sign up for the program. Participating students grow giant cabbages that often tip the scales at 40 pounds or more.
The program awards $1,000 scholarships to one student in each participating state who is randomly selected by the Commission of Agriculture's office from photos submitted by teachers. Learn more at www.bonnieplants.com.
