Nail Polish May Be Hazardous to Your Health
It's pedicure time, but beware: Some nail polishes labeled as nontoxic may contain harmful chemicals, including toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate (DPB), according to a survey of nail salons by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control.
Water-based nail polishes are safer, but because the water in the polish evaporates, the polish must be removed after wearing it for one week. The longer you wear it past a week, the harder it is to remove.
Here are some commonly available water-based brands:
Suncoat Products Inc.
Honeybee Gardens Nail Enamels
The following polishes that are not water-based are also deemed safe.
Peacekeeper Nail Paints
Sante Nail Enamels
Zoya Nail Polish
There are other safe products on the market as well. For more information, search ca.gov for Safer Nail Products.
