Mom-Founded Consignment Venture Celebrates With Sale in Cary
Ever dream of starting a successful business from your home? Five years ago, Triangle stay-at-home moms Toni Carpenter and Katy Williams founded Upscale Resale, a consignment business—offering upscale clothing, shoes and accessories—out of Carpenter's Holly Springs home.
The venture has since expanded to Greensboro and now has its own retail space at the Wellington Park shopping center, in Cary, where it will be holding a sale Aug 9-11 to celebrate its years in business. Each semi-annual sale benefits local charities including Thrift N Gift and Project Comfort.
The road to success has not been easy, however. In November 2008, Williams passed away suddenly after a brief illness. Carpenter persevered with the business, remembering her friend's passion about their work, and using their friendship as inspiration to keep going. Along the way, Carpenter says she has found joy in being a businesswoman, even as she continues to relish her role as mom. Balance in life is sometimes a tricky but rewarding tightrope walk.
"Being a stay-at-home mom for the last 11 years has been so wonderful for our family," she says. "But having a business that allows me to utilize my skills is also a gift. It's the best of both worlds because I get to do what I love - shop and meet other people – while still being with my kids when they get home from school."
